Non-Forest & Alternative Products
There are many other products created within the forest that are not wood related. These products can be profitable or for personal pleasure. Managing plants such as Christmas trees, nursery stock, ginseng or galax leaves or leasing your land to a hunting club are sources of income from your forest land other than timber harvesting. Establishing wildlife food plots to attract specific species of animals is a non-forest product management process that may not generate an income but still satisfy ones objectives for their property. This type of management is no different from managing for harvestable trees. It all starts with landowners objectives incorporated into a well developed Management Plan.
Virginia Forest Service has over 30 years of Natural Resource Management experience. Our field personnel are ready and willing to assist landowners with managing their land for both forest and non-forest products. If you have property that you want to manage for something other than timber products, we will do our best to inform you of all possible options and help you reach your goals.
