Timber Inventory and Appraisal
A timber inventory is a process used to estimate board feet volume within a defined boundary of forest land. Board feet is the standard measurement for wood volume and is the basis for how trees, logs and lumber are marketed. The dimensions of one board foot are 1” x 12” x 12”. The inventory process is called “cruising” and involves measuring tree sizes and recording them by species. Once the inventory and calculations have been completed, each species will have a total board foot volume.
Once the timber volume has been determined, it can be given a monetary value based on different variables. These variables include species and quality, current delivered log prices, logging cost, tract location, etc. These variables are ever changing. And as they do, so does the value of the standing timber.
