It takes many years of managing a tract or parcel of timber before it is ready to sale. This is usually a "once in a life time" payment for most landowners and it should be a pleasant and rewarding experience. If not handled professionally, a timber sale can be very stressful for a landowner and result in huge financial loss, liability issues, and an unproductive forest for the future.
Virginia Forest Service has over 30 years of experience in Natural Resource Management. We are continually working with landowners to sustain maximum production of their timberlands. Although economics is a major objective in a timber sale, Virginia Forest Service is committed to sound forestry practices and ensuring that harvesting is performed according to the desired specifications of the landowner. We do our best to maximize the landowner’s profits and see that harvesting is done right.
Our timber sales begin with a one on one meeting with the landowner that lays out terms of the sale such as boundary lines, harvest methods/techniques, time frames and seller/buyer contract specifications. Once all objectives and terms of the sale have been established with the landowner, Virginia Forest Service performs a timber cruise to estimate the volume and value of the standing timber to be sold. A sale packet is then developed and sent to all prospective buyers. This sale packet includes all pertinent information about the timber sale and a sale date. This type of sale is done as a sealed bid sale where the high bidder is awarded the rights to harvest the timber as specified in a contract to be signed by the seller and the buyer. Virginia Forest Service guides the Seller and the Buyer through the contract closing process. Another method of selling timber would be to take all of the above information and negotiate a sale price with a selected buyer.
After a timber sale and harvesting begins, Virginia Forest Service will periodically inspect the operation throughout its tenure to ensure all contract specifications are being complied with. When the timber harvest is completed and contract specifications are met, Virginia Forest Service will close the harvesting operation and assist with any necessary reforestation activities.
